The Retro Kit was designed to replace Skybolt’s original Generation I and II non-flexible Firewall Mounts installed in our early 1980 Cessna Conversion Kits. Our records indicate that most of the airframes that installed the Skybolt Gen I or II Mounts have been revised. There is a competing mount that is based on our Gen II Mount that remains on the market. Cessna issued Service Bulletin SB98-53-02 and revisions that addressed issues with the newer C172 R&S models with O360 engines that describes the exact same problems we experienced with the original mounts. Based on this Bulletin, Skybolt and Lord redesigned the Firewall Mount (SK2003-42A and J7444-42) with more shear load capacity to accommodate situations created when the engine is hitting the cowling. Not all airframes do this, but too many do, thus the failure rate of not only the Firewall Mount is high, the complete failure of the firewall mount bracket and possibly cracked firewalls are common. These are expensive fixes.
If you installed any conversion kit with older designed mounts and have experienced premature mount failure, cracked firewall mounts or cracked firewalls, the Skybolt Retro Kit is an available fix that will eliminate the re-occurring failures on all but a few airframes. Those airframes must attend to the engine mounts as the root of the problem that is allowing the engine to hit the cowling excessively during startup, shutdown, takeoff, climb out, and landing.
The Retro Kit replaces mounts and fasteners as a replacement kit to the original “conversion kit.”
This kit converts existing screws/fasteners to Skybolt® CLoc® Quarter Turn Fasteners.

Skybolt® Stainless Cowling Fastener Replacement Kits Overview
Stainless Cowling Kits replace the old, worn and rusted parts originally installed on your cowlings and access panels with exclusive Skybolt CLoc®, ZLoc®, or ALoc® style stainless fasteners. Many kits depicted may only replace certain portions of the engine cowling. Optional kits to complete all panels are available. The unique Skybolt Cowling Fastener Replacement Kits were developed over a span of 5 to 6 years utilizing Parts Manuals (IPC), field research, and customer feedback. We soon discovered that the Parts Manuals were very inaccurate and relied more on field experience. Despite exhaustive data, we also discovered that no two aircraft were ever the same. The Skybolt Cowling Fastener Kits will usually contain more of a selection than the aircraft may actually require so that a replacement project can efficiently move from start to finish. Like the Trim and Fuel Tank Kit development, many companies began to copy the Skybolt Cowling Kit product line only to discover just how difficult it is to understand each and every production aircraft produced from the 1940s to date. Without the supporting data to back up the fasteners required on most aircraft, the copy kits can supply about 70% of the required hardware. Skybolt’s goal is 100% in all of our kits. Cowlings are our business. As many of these kits can cost hundreds of dollars, you deserve the best product on the market and a company that can stand by your investment for as long as you own the aircraft.
